AutoCAD Civil 3D 2011, Run’s slow. How can I fix this?
I’m an Civil Engineering Student, and I use this program a lot at school for 3D modeling, road design, alignments and profiles ( all that good stuff ). I recently purchased a new laptop. Its a Lenovo Thinkpad W510 and its got pretty beefy credentials (intel i7, 8gb DDR3 RaM, 1Gb NIVIDIA Graphics card, 500GB 7200 rpm HDD) This surpasses all the system requirements for Civil 3D to run on a 64 bit operating system, BUT I’ve run it with a larger file (8,152KB) and even with not large files and it freezes every time I save and just run’s slow, and will freeze with using bigger commands.
Is there anything that may need to be tweeked with my system to fix this problem??? the school computers run it better, and their systems aren’t close to what mine has.
Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks
The thing to remember about system requirements is that they only specify the minimum of what is required for the software to run. What is usually NOT specified is what is required for the software to run WELL.
Clearly, you have enough RAM… 8Gb should be enough. To be sure, look at the RAM requirements for all of the software that you have running on your computer at the same time. RAM requirements are cumulative. In other words, if you have three programs which require 2Gb to run well, and they’re all running at the same time, then you will need a minimum of 6Gb of available RAM to support them. Verify that the cumulative memory footprint for all of your concurrently running applications, including Windows, does not exceed your 8gb of RAM.
Secondly, and probably more important that my suggestion above, is your video card. 1Gb on your video card is not very much when you’re doing 3D modelling. Look for a faster video card with 2, 3, or 4 times the amount of memory on board to support AutoCAD and Civil3D.
