Preparation Tips for an Engineering Entrance Examination
If a student considers enrolling for an engineering school post-secondary examination, the planning process should begin even before clearing high school. Engineering programs can be competitive and are rigorous. Therefore, it is important to plan high school courses accordingly. One should load up on subjects like Maths, Science, Mechanical Drawing and Computers to ensure that one is well prepared for the Engineering school. This article outlines some of the high school preparation that can be done by those wishing to major in engineering.
- Get fluent with both Math and Physics
Being an engineer requires the ability to make a lot of complex calculations quickly and correctly. Therefore, attaining proficiency in math and physics will give the student an upper edge when he/she is applying for any of the leading Engineering colleges in Delhi or Mumbai. Entrance examination for every Engineering college in India requires good analytical skill sets. If a student is good in Maths, he should work on constantly improving his skills and try to lay hands on some additional material like Mental Maths etc. If there is a Maths club or engineering club at the high school level then it would be a great idea to participate in the same and join in the quiz competitions etc. These clubs also hone skills in a way that prepares the student for colleges and universities which provide engineering courses.
- Devote equal Time to every Subject
While Maths and Physics may be the core subjects, all other subjects also needs to be dealt with equal importance. One should devote more time to subjects or topics where he/she is weak. Be it IIT entrance or AIEEE examination or state exams for entrance into engineering colleges in Bangalore and Kolkata, the cut off marks are set subject wise.
- Quality is the key
While starting study for an Engineering entance, the student must keep in mind that Quality is more important than Quantity: Doing 100 quality & concepts based questions is more important than doing 1000 questions which have not been selected carefully. Remember that the purpose is to sharpen problem-solving skills. Start with conventional methods of problem solving but improvise constantly & build your own shortcuts & ways of attacking the problem. While practicing the problem always try to solve the problem on your own. If you are unable to solve a problem do not hurry to consult the solution. Study the relevant theory again, paying attention to the finer points and the problem in the back of mind. While doing problem solving try to strengthen and develop your conceptual understanding by analyzing deeply and correlating the problem with real life situations. While practicing identify your strong & weak areas (subject wise/topic wise/question wise). Testing your preparation chapter by chapter can do this. Through a structured test you should be able to diagnose which chapter, which concept & what type of problems you need to practice more.
- Improve the strike rate
The most important factor for clearing an entrance examination for any Engineering College in India is to keep a track of the average speed of solving questions. Participating in test series helps save time & temperament management during the final exams. It has been observed that most of the students loose 15 to 20% of their marks not because they do not know the subject but because they fail to apply the basic concepts correctly. This is basically due to examination fear & pressure. These marks that a student looses because of silly mistakes (calculation errors, confusion, fail to apply the right concepts, solving the problem by long method) can be reduced if a student regularly participates in test series based on the pattern & level of final exams
